From Forbes by way of domain king Frank Schilling (who in turn got it from Joe Davison) comes a feature on the art of domaining and a list of the five most expensive domain names in the world. They are, in order:
- sex.com ($12m)
- porn.com ($9.5m)
- business.com($7.5m)
- diamond.com ($7.5m)
- beer.com ($7m)
The article gives insight into the history of these domains - many of them were registered by geeky guys not unlike myself back in the day when domains were extremely expensive. Oh, how I wish I had gotten spangler.com back then!
Type-in traffic is key
Want a great domain name that sells? Make sure it’s generic. Believe it or not, there are people out there who are looking for chairs and actually type in “chairs.com” instead of simply searching for the keyword. Of course, like the best partners and the best business ideas, the best domain names are pretty much all taken. You’ll have to dig deep in to your pockets to get a superstar domain name. The more realistic approach is to capitalize on a hot trend by buying up domain names related to something popular or imminently popular, much like Tyler Cruz did after Starcraft 2 was announced.
It seems that more bloggers and others in the “make money online” niche are discovering domaining as an easier way to make more. The only problem is that starting a domain empire can have a large entrance cost, since with over 100 million names registered, finding a unique one with some value is made all the more difficult.
On another note, it looks like the admins over at sex.com have a sense of humor!
